There is a very well documented case of a kitten that climbed the Matterhorn. A climber (it may have been Sir Edward Whymper) came across this apparently stray kitten when he started his climb and it followed him all the way to the summit.

You mentioned spraying perfume on cats to get them used to each other, and that reminds me of something people used to do here in England (including my mother). If people with a cat moved to another house, the first thing they’d do at their new home was to put butter on the cat’s front paws. This was supposed to prevent the cat from trying to return to its previous home, something that results in a lot of cats getting lost. I think the idea behind the practice was that as the cat licked the butter off, it would decide that a taste like this was worth staying around for.

Perhaps you could also mention the function of the reflecting layer that makes cats’ eyes glow at night. This layer – called the tapetum – is made of guanine crystals and it captures the light that’s already gone through the cat’s receptor cells and sends them back, giving the cells a ‘double dose’ of the light, which is why cats see so well in dim light.

We have two cats in our house, and recently one of the cats has been urinating in the corner of a particular bedroom (even though we have two cat litter boxes in the house). We have found that putting a bowl of food in the corner eliminates the cat’s bad habit, since most animals won’t urinate near the same place they eat from.

One major toxin is automotive radiator anti-freeze. It’s hard to imagine that a cat would want to drink that smelly green fluid, but they do, and it is very not-good for them.

There are also some seemingly innocuous common houseplants that are quite toxic. Keep lillies, jade plant, philodendron, elephant ear, asparagus fern and cyclamen away from your kitty.

Octopus, Cat of the Sea?

Perhaps the closest equivalent to a cat in the ocean is an octopus. They average around the same size as cats, they are known to be playful, they are carnivorous, and they are surprisingly intelligent.

Scientists have trained octopi to perform simple tasks. They have been observed pulling the stoppers out of bottles to get at the stuff inside, and even unscrewing jar lids.

Compared to a cat, the octopus is a weird animal. They have three hearts, all beating in their own rhythm, their blood is blue and they have little concern about losing arms, because they can just grow new ones. Their mental capacity, like cats, is centered in their brains, but each leg also has its own independent brain.

Some of the largest octopi live not in some remote deep part on the Indian Ocean, but in Puget Sound in the State of Washington, USA, where they have been found with armspans up to 30 feet (9.1 meters) long.

On some distant planet with large oceans, octopi may have evolved into the dominant species, in terms of intelligence. Could beings exist somewhere that are better able to communicate, more compassionate, and more successful than humans, that have eight flexible arms and live underwater?

Or, perhaps on some waterworld, their equivalent of octopi would be the pets of that’s world equivalent of humans.

This is a remarkably endearing and educational video. Mark Rober taught us many interesting facts about octopi. The plural can also also be octopuses. He did point out that their blue blood is copper-based, and that they have three hearts. What he didn’t mention is that all three hearts beat with independent rhythms. Among their many defenses, such as camouflage and squirting water out of their jet to swim away very quickly, is the ability to squirt a cloud of ink, thereby obscuring their view from enemies. The largest octopi, living off the coast of Washington State on the west coast of the United States, have been known to grow to beyond 30 feet across (9.1 meters) and weigh as much as 600 pounds (272 kg) Their eyes can be as big as 15 inches (38cm) in diameter.

Dogs

In one large city a phone operator traced the source of an emergency phone call because the caller would not speak. The phone only emitted unusual noises. When the ambulance crew arrived at the scene, they found a basset hound who had dialed 911 in the process of chewing up the phone.

Many breeds of dogs are the result of human intervention. By selective breeding, the dogs have been made cuter. Very little dogs and pug-nosed dogs may have been bred too far into their specialty. The problem is with their teeth. It seems that their teeth have not decreased in size as much as their mouths, and when these teeth grow in, they come in all crooked. These crooked teeth trap food particles and eventually cause extreme decay and periodontal disease.

You can actually brush a dog’s teeth, and should, to help spare them the pain of mouth problems. To do it, start when the dog is quite young, and put your finger in their mouths and rub their teeth while playing with them. They will get used to this, and you can eventually substitute a toothbrush for your fingers. Don’t use human toothpaste, which is designed to be spit out. Use a small amount of baking soda.

He did point out that their blue blood is copper-based, and that they have three hearts. What he didn’t mention is that all three hearts beat with independent rhythms.
