Unexpected Facts About French Fries

Unexpected Facts About French Fries

Origins & History

Not from France – French fries actually originated in Belgium. The name “French fries” comes from American soldiers in World War I who tasted them in French-speaking Belgium.

18th-century roots – The earliest known recipe for fried potatoes was recorded in France in 1755 by a French cook named François Pierre La Varenne.

Thomas Jefferson introduced them to the U.S. – He encountered fries during his time in France and served them at a White House dinner in the early 1800s.

World’s largest fry producer – McDonald’s is the largest buyer of potatoes and biggest producer of French fries in the world.

Fries were once a luxury – In the 19th century, fries were considered a delicacy served only in fancy French restaurants.

Names & Variations Around the World

In France, fries are called “pommes frites”, or just “frites”.

In the UK, fries are called “chips”, while what Americans call “chips” are known as “crisps”.

In Canada, fries are served with cheese curds and gravy in a dish called poutine.

In Japan, fries are often dusted with unique flavors like wasabi, matcha, or seaweed.

In India, fries can be spicy and served with masala seasoning and chutney.

Types & Cooking Methods

There are more than 20 types of fries, including curly fries, waffle fries, shoestring fries, steak fries, and crinkle-cut fries.

The longest French fry ever made was 34 inches (86 cm) long!

Air frying is a healthier way to make fries by using 90% less oil than deep-frying.

The perfect fry has a crisp outer shell and a fluffy interior. The ideal temperature for frying is 325°F (163°C) for the first fry and 375°F (190°C) for the second fry.

Fries can be made from sweet potatoes, yams, plantains, zucchini, carrots, or even avocado.

Cultural & Fun Facts

National French Fry Day is celebrated on July 13th in the United States.

In Belgium, there’s a tradition of eating fries with mayo, which shocks many Americans.

Ketchup is the most popular dipping sauce in the U.S., while mayonnaise dominates in Europe.

The average American eats about 30 pounds (13.6 kg) of French fries per year. So, in the US, the total consumption of fries is approximately, 124,000 tractor-trailer loads of fries. If you lined up those trucks bumper-to-bumper, you’d have a line 1,640 (2,639 km) miles long. That would stretch from New York City to Miami with a few hundred miles extra.

Fries are banned in some schools in an attempt to promote healthier eating habits.

Unexpected Facts

Potatoes are about 80% water, which is why fries shrink when cooked.

Fries caused a political controversy in 2003, when the U.S. Congress renamed them “freedom fries” during tensions with France over the Iraq War.

Cold fries taste worse because the starches crystallize and lose their texture when cooled.

The first frozen French fry was invented by J.R. Simplot in the 1940s, which revolutionized the fast-food industry.

Curly fries get their shape from being cut with a special spiralizer tool.

The most expensive fries are served at Serendipity 3 in New York City, costing $200 per plate. They are made with truffle oil, edible gold, and fancy cheeses.

Fries can be used as a makeshift spoon for sauces and dips, making them a popular finger food.

Loaded fries are fries topped with bacon, cheese, sour cream, and other ingredients, similar to nachos.

Write Your Book

It’s easier than ever to write a book these days and publish it as an ebook, the fastest selling format. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to make money. Platforms like Amazon get up to 70% of the money. That’s crazy!

Instead, we can build a website from which your book will sell automatically, and you keep all but around 3.5 percent, the credit card processing fee. Your site will look nice, be mobile-friendly, have SEO and SSL, but most important, it’s a complete automatic turn-key store. It’s passive income!

You retain full rights to your book. You can publish it elsewhere concurrently if you wish.

It’s nice to think that a week later, the money will start rolling in. That can happen, but it’s rare. After your site is built, you’ll want some marketing. That can be magical. You can market it yourself through social media, or we’ll be glad to market your book for you. We’re very good at that part also. We’ll be glad to discuss a surprisingly affordable plan with you.

My team and I can provide everything for writers’ success: Coaching, editing, illustration, and AI technical services. Write your book. We’ll do the rest! Don’t Let Your Website Just Sit There…

Don't let your website just sit there

People commonly have websites built that get almost no visitors. It doesn’t have to be that way. For instance, I had one client who was averaging three visitors a month, one of which was her mother. A month later, she was getting more than 14,000 visitors per day. Now, your success probably won’t be as spectacular as that, but it could still change your world in a big way! All you need is some good marketing.

You don’t have to do that yourself. I used to provide marketing, then later focused on website development. Now, I’m just sending people to some marketers that fit all the requirements below and are somewhat vetted. They have passed the tests I could manage to give them, and so far, no one has complained about their services. I actually threw two people out of the group when clients got back to me with complaints. These marketers give me a commission which I appreciate, so there is no cost to you for contacting me. Plus, I think you’ll enjoy my friendly conversational style.

How Find a Good Website Marketer

1. Don’t pay someone a big deposit up front. I can’t tell you how many times these marketers would start a little bit of work, then disappear, never again answering their email or phones. My clients lost every cent.

2. Avoid long-term contracts and keep an eye on results. I had a client who told me she had been paying $2,000 per month for over two years for ‘SEO maintenance.’ I asked her how well that was working. She said that as far as she knew, not a single client had come from that.

This is a showcase site for Jeff Napier of US-Web-Design. Surprisingly low-cost solutions for all your website and marketing needs. More...

3. You’ll want to work with someone who speaks good English, preferably someone in the USA. Otherwise, you’ll spend a lot of time and perhaps money in fixing all the bad grammar and misunderstandings.

4. You want a friendly open-minded marketer. It’s really hard to work with someone who is so crazy or intimidating that you can’t communicate what you want.

5. Consider all marketing ‘research and development.’ It is unrealistic to believe you could pay a marketer a few hundred dollars and suddenly you become wealthy. Whereas that could happen, it is rare. Marketing is not cheap and doesn’t work for everyone every time. You will have to spend some money. Your marketer should start with small experiments with good analytics. Once something starts to work, then you will become wealthy!

6. Communicate as much as you can with your marketer. You know your product or service better than anyone. Without clear communication, you’ll end up with something that’s off-target or misrepresented.

How To Avoid Crazy Webmasters

I’ve had so many clients tell me about the crazy things that their web designers have done that I ought to tell you how to avoid falling into the same traps. Some of these are rather amusing except for the thousands of people who have had to deal with the consequences.

I’m retiring from the business, so I’m no longer available, but I’ll be glad to put you in touch with good people. These people fit all the requirements below and are somewhat vetted. They have passed the tests I could manage to give them, and so far, no one has complained about their services. 3. Make sure you have all your usernames and passwords. I’ve had a few clients who ended up with websites full of typographical errors, incorrect images, and downright misinformation. They didn’t have their own passwords, so they couldn’t even take down these embarrassing websites representing their professional identities.

4. You’ll want to work with someone who speaks good English, preferably someone in the USA. Otherwise, you’ll spend a lot of time and perhaps money in editing all the bad grammar and misunderstandings.

6. Ideally, your web developer should have artistic talent. You want a good-looking website.

7. Your developer should also have technical expertise. For instance there’s not much worse than a website that doesn’t work right, or doesn’t look good on mobile phones, for instance. Thirty-two percent of web browsing is done on phones these days. I’ve had more than one client who ended up with an incomplete website because the developer literally didn’t know how to get everything working right.

8. The developer should also be good at SEO and a good marketer, or have good marketers on their team. Once your website is done, you don’t want it to just sit there. You want targeted visitors, people who want what you’re offering, and lots of them.

I asked AI, “Please give me your thoughts on the future of automotive transportation.” This is the response:

The future of automotive transportation looks like it’s straight out of a sci-fi movie. With the rise of autonomous vehicles, electric cars, and advanced connectivity, we’re on the cusp of a revolution in how we move. Self-driving cars could transform commutes into opportunities for productivity or relaxation, and reduce accidents caused by human error. Electric vehicles are poised to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and cut down on emissions, making transportation more sustainable.

Connected cars will talk to each other and to infrastructure, optimizing traffic flow and reducing congestion. The integration of AI will allow for smart route planning and predictive maintenance, making journeys smoother and more efficient.

But it’s not all smooth sailing. Issues like cybersecurity, data privacy, and the impact on jobs in driving-related industries will need addressing. Regulatory frameworks will have to evolve to keep up with these innovations.

In short, the road ahead is thrilling but paved with challenges. How do you see these changes impacting your life?

Dogs

In one large city a phone operator traced the source of an emergency phone call because the caller would not speak. The phone only emitted unusual noises. When the ambulance crew arrived at the scene, they found a basset hound who had dialed 911 in the process of chewing up the phone.

In 1978, New York City passed a law that required residents to clean up after their dogs. Until that time, people had to walk around 54 tons of dog poop deposited daily.

There was a dog (part collie) who liked to take baths and learned how to turn the water on and off and adjust the faucets to get the right temperature.

Dogs see only black, white and gray. They can hear much better than humans, though. They can hear sounds ten times farther away than we can.

There was a dog in Grand Rapids, Michigan that was twice as large as an adult man. This St. Bernard weighed 310 pounds.

The original reason for the haircuts that poodles get was to make swimming easier for them.

The only things that are taxed in Ile de Sein, France, are dogs.

An average dog costs its owner about $2 per day. In ten years, that’s over $7,000!

If dogs were criminals, you could keep track of them by taking their nose-prints, which are as unique as human fingerprints.

Americans spend four times more money on dog food than on baby food.

Experiments have suggested that a dog’s sense of smell may be one million times more sensitive or accurate than a human’s.

Some advantages of owning a dog for elderly people:
1. The well-trained large dog gives a sense of security or safety.
2. The dog can be a reason to get regular exercise – going for
walks.
3. Touching your pet reduces tension and blood pressure.

Pit Bulls, the breed of dogs which are mostly lovey, even-tempered pets, are sometimes bred to be vicious, and may be outlawed in England, meaning all o them in that country could be sentenced to death. There are 5,256,000 pitbulls in the United States, and approximately 9 million in England.

Many breeds of dogs are the result of human intervention. By selective breeding, the dogs have been made cuter. Very little dogs and pug-nosed dogs may have been bred too far into their specialty. The problem is with their teeth. It seems that their teeth have not decreased in size as much as their mouths, and when these teeth grow in, they come in all crooked. These crooked teeth trap food particles and eventually cause extreme decay and periodontal disease.

You can actually brush a dog’s teeth, and should, to help spare them the pain of mouth problems. To do it, start when the dog is quite young, and put your finger in their mouths and rub their teeth while playing with them. They will get used to this, and you can eventually substitute a toothbrush for your fingers. Don’t use human toothpaste, which is designed to be spit out. Use a small amount of baking soda.
